Bird Banding Demonstration at The Wilderness Center Sat., Jan. 9, 10:30-11:30 a.m. See birds up close as banding procedures are explained and demonstrated. Beginning Carving Course at The Wilderness Center-Sat., Jan. 9 & 23, Feb. 13 & 27, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. TWC’s Woodcarving Club is offering a Beginning Carving Course of 4 sessions for beginner carvers or wanna-bes. Bob Raber of the Club will be the Lead Instructor. Covers the basics of knife carving while each student carves a Santa Claus in the round. Each student will receive a carving knife, thumb guard, and information about the nature of wood, sources of wood and tools, and publications on carving. Sessions follow Club meetings; students are invited to attend the meeting. $20/member; $25/nonmember includes 8 hours of instruction, a carving knife, and other materials. Past-Beginner Carving Course at The Wilderness Center-Sats., Jan. 9, 23, Feb. 13, 27, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. TWC’s Woodcarving Club is offering a carving course for past-beginner carvers. It will be held following the Club meeting. The project will be a decoratively-carved welcome sign for your yard or trailer site. In addition to the coaching for carving the sign, there will be information about wood characteristics, wood poisoning, sources for exotic woods, tools, etc. Students may use their own tools or ones loaned by TWC during the sessions at the Center. $10/member; $12/nonmember for 8 hours of instruction and materials. Foxfield Preserve Info Session at The Wilderness Center Sat., Jan. 9, 2 p.m. Foxfield Preserve is a nature preserve cemetery at TWC. Natural burial is an economical, environmentally friendly alternative to modern burial, as fewer resources are used. As a nature preserve, we provide wildlife habitat, a clean watershed, and clean air. Walking trails allow the community to enjoy beauty and serenity of the preserve. Your Sky Tonight at The Wilderness Center Tue., Jan. 12, 1 p.m. We’re trying a new series this year! Join us for this informal time under the Planetarium dome on the 2nd Tues. of every month. Bring your questions—you’ll determine the program! Includes astronomy in the news and a tour of the sky this evening. . Free and open to the public. Wilderness Sprouts: Beaver at The Wilderness Center Fri., Jan. 15, 10 a.m. Learn why beaver are important to our wetlands, visit the beaver lodge, make an edible beaver lodge to take home. Breakfast With the Birds at The Wilderness Center Sat., Jan. 16, 9 a.m. Basically, there’s coffee, doughnuts, and birdwatching with the TWC Bird Club. Families, all ages. Free, but donations requested to cover the cost of the food. For more information www.wildernesscenter.org or 1-877-359-5235.

Story Time: Snowy Day at The Wilderness Center Wed., Jan. 20, 11 a.m. Winter is cold, but we’ll warm your heart with stories and songs. Take a short walk to see signs of animals and look for our missing mitten.

Family Astronomy: Make & Use a Star Map at The Wilderness Center Sat., Jan. 23, 2 p.m. Want to find your own way around the night sky? Make and use a planisphere, a star map you can set to any time. In this program, you’ll learn to find the major constellations on your own. Family Astronomy programs include an introduction and a Planetarium show and are usually 30-45 min. Winter Geocache Event at The Wilderness Center Sat., Jan. 30, 6-9 p.m. The TWC Geocache Club will host their winter event, SIX MORE WEEKS OF WINTER!?!?! Bring your gps, extra batteries, and a plate of cookies to share. Dress for the weather! There is no charge but donations to the Center are always appreciated. The Wilderness Center is a nonprofit nature center located one mile west of Wilmot, Ohio just north of highway 250. The Center is dedicated to connecting our community with nature, educating people of all ages, conserving natural resourses and practicing environmental stewarship. The Center derives its support from memberships and donations. It is not a government agency and is not supported by taxes.
