PASSPORT DAY IN THE USA

03/27/2010

The Winesburg Ohio Post Office will be participating in this year’s “Passport Day in the USA” on Saturday, March 27, 2010.

The event is designed to bring attention to the fact that passports are needed for any International air travel as well as land border crossings between the US, Canada, and Mexico. Most cruises now require a passport as well.

Now is the time to plan for that fishing trip to Canada, or visiting a relative staying in a foreign country! Staring last June, passports are required to re-enter the US from neighboring countries by land. And if you are traveling by plane, the requirement for a passport book has been in place for quite some time.

Make sure you are ready for that trip by attending the Winesburg Post Office’s Passport Day, Saturday, March 27th, from 8 am to noon. Applicants will need to bring their original or a certified copy of their birth certificate, issued by the county or state, and not a hospital birth record. They also need a photo ID, such as a driver’s license or state-issued ID card. They will also need to know their parent’s birth information, i.e., when and where their parents were born. Other information is basic, such as address, occupation, and so on. Children age sixteen and under need BOTH parents present to execute the application. Photos are available at the Winesburg Post Office as well, making it a true one-stop shopping trip! Most passports take four to six weeks to issue, so be sure and plan early. Passport books and cards can be expedited, but there is an extra fee.

The employees at Winesburg process passports on a daily basis also, but for this event, two clerks will be available to make the process quick and easy! The cost for a passport book, needed for air travel, is $115 and includes the photographs. A passport card, good only for land border crossings, costs $60 with photos. Passports fees are reportedly going up by $35 very soon, so now is the time to apply!

Let Debbie or Sherri help you on March 27th from 8 to noon. No appointment is necessary. If you have further questions, please call the post office at 330-359-5512.
