SUMMARY:“Wayne 360\: Build Your Body. Ease Your Mind. Feed Your Soul. Know Your World”
DESCRIPTION:
Health and wellness are hot topics these days and The University of Akron Wayne College is planning a series of speakers and special events that will provide relevant and timely information to community members as they seek to make healthy living choices.

Starting this fall\, the college is launching “Wayne 360\: Build Your Body. Ease Your Mind. Feed Your Soul. Know Your World.” The series takes a holistic approach to wellness and focuses on the mind/body connection.

Organized by new Wayne College Events Coordinator Debbie Muniak\, who was brought on board at the beginning of the year to plan events that are both interesting and educational\, the series features speakers\, live theater\, art and film. “As an institution for higher learning\, we believe education happens every day\, both inside and outside of the classroom\,” says Muniak.
Professors and invited speakers will be offering the latest information in the areas of fitness\, diet\, exercise and stress management. Free massages will be given by students of the college’s new massage therapy program and exercise demonstrations will be led in the gymnasium. These instructor-led sessions will give attendees an opportunity to try tai chi\, yoga\, Jazzercise and circuit training in a supervised setting.

Wellness extends beyond the physical body therefore the college is partnering with Wayne Center for the Arts to bring its first gallery exhibit to campus. “Vividly Wayne\: City Streets\, Artifacts &amp\; Landscapes” opens to the public beginning Sept. 17 and runs through Nov. 19. The collection features painting\, photography and recycled sculpture by locally-known artists.

In November\, Wayne brings the nationally known troupe the American Shakespeare Center to campus to perform As You Like It on Friday\, Nov. 5 and Macbeth on Saturday\, Nov. 6. Recently reviewed by The Washington Post as “shamelessly entertaining” and The Boston Globe as “Phenomenal…bursting with energy\,” the performances give the community the opportunity to have a theater experience without having to travel far to get it.

To further enhance the theater experience\, the college is offering “Dinner and a Show” for the first time. Prior to Saturday evening’s performance\, an Elizabethan-themed dinner will be served in the same building as the show.
In October\, Wayne College will be co-sponsoring Candidate’s Night with the League of Women Voters.

Also that month\, The University of Akron main campus is hosting China Week. As part of that celebration\, a UA student will be sharing a documentary based on her recent trip to Asia that she wrote and produced as part of a class project.
In the spring\, the focus will shift to Earth Day as professors of biology and engineering lead a discussion about the state of the environment and what is going on in Washington to find new\, cleaner energy sources.

A full calendar of events and more details can be found at <a href=\\"http\://www.wayne.uakron.edu\\" title=\\"www.wayne.uakron.edu\\">www.wayne.uakron.edu or by calling 330-684-8729.

SUMMARY:Fireside Readers Book Discussion Group at The University of Akron Wayne College
DESCRIPTION:
The Fireside Readers Book Discussion Group at The University of Akron Wayne College is underway for the sixth year. The next meeting will be Monday\, Sept. 13 in the Wayne College Community Room at 7 p.m.

The group will discuss The Gardner Heist\: The True Story of the World's Largest Unsolved Art Theft by Ulrich Boser. Participants may reserve a copy of this book by contacting a local public library or by becoming a community member borrower at the Wayne College library.

The group meets the first Monday of the month for the remainder of the fall semester. In October\, the group will read The Soloist. by Steve Lopez. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot is the selection for November\, and December’s book will be The Good Soldiers by David Finkel.
Maureen Lerch\, manager of library services at Wayne College\, reminds book lovers that they can join the group at any time.

“There are no dues or commitments\,” says Lerch. “Becoming a member is as simple as coming to a discussion. We have snacks and great talks about great books. Coming to one discussion doesn’t mean someone is required to come back\, but we find that people have lots of fun and want to come back.”
Once the Air Show begins spectators will be amazed by such acts at The Iron Eagle Aerobatics\, Dave Dacy &amp\; Tony Kazian-The Super Stearman WingWalking Team\, The Misty Blues All-woman Skydiving Team\, stunt flyer Jim 'Fang' Maroney in his DeHavilland Super Chipmunk\, plus many other surprises in the air!
SUMMARY:Secrest Arboretum’s Planting and Transplanting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:
Fall’s a great time to plant trees. And you can learn how to do it — it takes more than digging a hole in the ground — in Secrest Arboretum’s Planting and Transplanting Workshop on Tuesday\, Sept. 21.

Ken Cochran\, curator of the arboretum\, said the workshop's goal is to get trees to live long and prosper.

“People often don’t realize that after you plant a tree\, it takes three years of follow-up to establish it\,” he said.

“Knowing the right techniques for planting and transplanting is part of sustainable landscaping. If a tree is planted right\, it’s going to last.”

SUMMARY:Global Influence of South Asia the Focus of 2010 Wooster Forum
DESCRIPTION:
Four prominent figures to speak during the annual fall series\, titled \\"South Asian Perspectives\\"

The global influence of South Asia will be the primary topic of discussion at the 2010 Wooster Forum\, which will be hosted by The College of Wooster this fall. Four prominent speakers will address a range of issues\, from religion and politics to science and the environment. All four sessions will be held in McGaw Chapel (340 E. University St.) beginning at 7\:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

The annual series opens on Tuesday\, Sept. 21\, when Ali Eteraz\, discusses his memoir Children of Dust\, which details his coming of age in Islam as a resident of rural Pakistan\, the American Bible Belt\, and the modern Middle East. A graduate of Emory University\, where he received high honors in philosophy\, and Temple Law School\, Eteraz was born in Lahore\, Pakistan\, and raised in the Dominican Republic\, Pakistan\, and United States. His memoir was the summer reading assignment for incoming first-year students.

Ashraf Ghani\, chairman of the Institute for State Effectiveness (ISE)\, will present \\"Afghanistan\: Owning the Present\; Building the Future\\" at the second Forum event on Tuesday\, Oct. 5. A former student at American University of Beirut\, Ghani received his M.A. and Ph.D. in anthropology from Columbia University. He served on the faculty of Kabul University (1973-77)\, UC-Berkeley (1983)\, and Johns Hopkins University (1983-1991). He has done research in Russia and spent a year as a Fulbright Scholar in Pakistan. A native of Afghanistan who held positions at the UN and World Bank\, he served as an economic adviser to President Hamid Karzai and as the Chancellor of Kabul University. He also ran for President of Afghanistan against Karzai\, but finished third in the voting.

Vandana Shiva\, a physicist and environmentalist\, will speak about \\"Sustainability in South Asia\\" on Wednesday\, Oct. 13. Active in the Chipko Movement\, a women's-based group committed to saving the forests of India\, Shiva studied physics and received her Ph.D. from the University of Western Ontario (Canada). She has been an advocate for sustainable agriculture with a focus on biodiversity and water preservation. In addition\, she has argued that environmental problems need to be understood in a global context and that effective solutions must be integrated with issues addressing the empowerment of women and international development. Her publications include Soil Not Oil\: Environmental Justice in an Age of Climate Crisis (2008).

Eric Dinerstein\, chief scientist and vice president of Conservation Science for the World Wildlife Fund\, will conclude the series when he addresses \\"The Future of Conservation\\" on Tuesday\, Oct. 26. He began his conservation work in 1975 as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal\, where he conducted a census of the tiger population in the Karnali-Bardia Wildlife Reserve. The University of Washington awarded him an M.A. based upon his tiger research and a Ph.D. for research on fruit bats. In addition\, he has engaged in research investigating strategies to protect tigers\, elephants\, and one-horned rhinos.
