TOY PROJECT NEEDS:
Our efforts are year-round to get ready for our December Toy Project. As you begin your back-to-school shopping for your children or grandchildren, you might consider buying a toy for another child. Maybe you love to go to garage sales! Keep your eyes out for good bargains on quality used toys. We welcome your Christmas donations…even in July and August!
Currently, we have some specific needs: Teen boys sports hats, shirts, sleeping bags or dart boards are always needed. Gifts for children ages 6-11 might be sleeping bags, race tracks, hot wheels, or Lego sets.
Books suitable for our teen readers are always in short supply. Can you help by donating a book?

General Needs: Self adhesive contact paper, Magic eraser cleaning pads, glue sticks for a hot glue gun and floral ribbon of all colors.

Health and wellness are hot topics these days and The University of Akron Wayne College is planning a series of speakers and special events that will provide relevant and timely information to community members as they seek to make healthy living choices.

Starting this fall, the college is launching “Wayne 360: Build Your Body. Ease Your Mind. Feed Your Soul. Know Your World.” The series takes a holistic approach to wellness and focuses on the mind/body connection.

Organized by new Wayne College Events Coordinator Debbie Muniak, who was brought on board at the beginning of the year to plan events that are both interesting and educational, the series features speakers, live theater, art and film. “As an institution for higher learning, we believe education happens every day, both inside and outside of the classroom,” says Muniak.
Professors and invited speakers will be offering the latest information in the areas of fitness, diet, exercise and stress management. Free massages will be given by students of the college’s new massage therapy program and exercise demonstrations will be led in the gymnasium. These instructor-led sessions will give attendees an opportunity to try tai chi, yoga, Jazzercise and circuit training in a supervised setting.

Wellness extends beyond the physical body therefore the college is partnering with Wayne Center for the Arts to bring its first gallery exhibit to campus. “Vividly Wayne: City Streets, Artifacts & Landscapes” opens to the public beginning Sept. 17 and runs through Nov. 19. The collection features painting, photography and recycled sculpture by locally-known artists.

In November, Wayne brings the nationally known troupe the American Shakespeare Center to campus to perform As You Like It on Friday, Nov. 5 and Macbeth on Saturday, Nov. 6. Recently reviewed by The Washington Post as “shamelessly entertaining” and The Boston Globe as “Phenomenal…bursting with energy,” the performances give the community the opportunity to have a theater experience without having to travel far to get it.

To further enhance the theater experience, the college is offering “Dinner and a Show” for the first time. Prior to Saturday evening’s performance, an Elizabethan-themed dinner will be served in the same building as the show.
In October, Wayne College will be co-sponsoring Candidate’s Night with the League of Women Voters.

Also that month, The University of Akron main campus is hosting China Week. As part of that celebration, a UA student will be sharing a documentary based on her recent trip to Asia that she wrote and produced as part of a class project.
In the spring, the focus will shift to Earth Day as professors of biology and engineering lead a discussion about the state of the environment and what is going on in Washington to find new, cleaner energy sources.

A full calendar of events and more details can be found at www.wayne.uakron.edu or by calling 330-684-8729.

Aerial seeding is scheduled for the week of August 23-28, 2010, weather depending. Cover crops reduce soil erosion by having a growing crop over winter. Although oats die during the coldest part of winter, the roots and residue will continue to hold soil in place. In addition, the cover crop adds nutrients and improves soil structure.
About the program:
 Pilot Butch Fisher of Fisher’s Ag Service (based in Cardington, Ohio) is dropping either oats or rye seed.
There are no chemicals at all involved in the seeding process.
 Fisher Ag Service does crop dusting and aerial seeding on thousands of acres each year and Butch has
35 years of flying experience.
 He is flying an Air Tractor, which is designed specifically for agricultural spraying and seeding. The pilot is using aerial maps and GPS to target the correct fields for application. He makes several passes over
the field to insure good coverage. He has to fly wide over the field ends to get turned around. Because of the many houses in our county, it’s almost impossible for him to not fly over houses and barns in the process. He is not reckless, it’s necessary to fly low to the ground to get good seed coverage.
 Fisher Ag Service is flying out of the Holmes County Airport and it will take probably three to five days to cover the 2000 acres or so of cover crops coordinated through the SWCD program. The pilot flies from dusk until dawn, if visibility allows.
 Call the SWCD office at 330-674-2811 if you have any questions.

We believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for life. Because of the Y, more young people in neighborhoods around the nation are taking a greater interest in learning and making smarter life choices. At the Y, children and teens learn values and positive behaviors, and can explore their unique talents and interests, helping them realize their potential. That makes for confident kids today and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow.

The Massillon Family YMCA begins this educational journey with Preschool Pals. Our preschool is designed to offer your child the most well-rounded beginning a parent can find by adding swimming, tumbling, and dance into the traditional program.
We would like to invite you to an open house where you can meet the preschool administrator and learn more about our program. The open house will be on Wednesday, August 25th at 7:00pm.

As with everything the Y offers, financial assistance is available thanks to the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign. Preschool begins on September 7th. Register by August 31st and save $5. Preschool for 3 year olds is $60 per month, held on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00am to 11:30am. Preschool for 4/5 year-olds is $81 per month and held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00am to 11:30am.
