People to People Ministries Back to School Project 2010 Needs Your Help! Start: 07/28/2010 End: 08/15/2010 This year marks the 27th year we will help prepare children for school. The 2010 Back to School Project will be held August 7-12. This very special project provides each child (in grades K-12) “nice as new clothing”, new socks, underwear, school supplies and new shoes. To pull off a project of this size requires a lot of help. Can you help us this year? Maybe you’d like to shop with children—we need both men and women and complete training is provided. Restocking tables is an important job as well. Help with set up at the start or clean up at the end is also extremely appreciated. To sign-up, call Laura Groves at 330-262-1662, ext. 213. As you begin your back-to-school shopping for your children or grandchildren, you might consider buying a toy for another child. Maybe you love to go to garage sales! Keep your eyes out for good bargains on quality used toys. We welcome your Christmas donations…even in July and August! Currently, we have some specific needs: Teen boys sports hats, shirts, sleeping bags or dart boards are always needed. Gifts for children ages 6-11 might be sleeping bags, race tracks, hot wheels, or Lego sets. Books suitable for our teen readers are always in short supply. Can you help by donating a book? Feed Your Soul. Know Your World” Health and wellness are hot topics these days and The University of Akron Wayne College is planning a series of speakers and special events that will provide relevant and timely information to community members as they seek to make healthy living choices. Starting this fall, the college is launching “Wayne 360: Build Your Body. Ease Your Mind. Feed Your Soul. Know Your World.” The series takes a holistic approach to wellness and focuses on the mind/body connection. Organized by new Wayne College Events Coordinator Debbie Muniak, who was brought on board at the beginning of the year to plan events that are both interesting and educational, the series features speakers, live theater, art and film. “As an institution for higher learning, we believe education happens every day, both inside and outside of the classroom,” says Muniak. Professors and invited speakers will be offering the latest information in the areas of fitness, diet, exercise and stress management. Free massages will be given by students of the college’s new massage therapy program and exercise demonstrations will be led in the gymnasium. These instructor-led sessions will give attendees an opportunity to try tai chi, yoga, Jazzercise and circuit training in a supervised setting. Wellness extends beyond the physical body therefore the college is partnering with Wayne Center for the Arts to bring its first gallery exhibit to campus. “Vividly Wayne: City Streets, Artifacts & Landscapes” opens to the public beginning Sept. 17 and runs through Nov. 19. The collection features painting, photography and recycled sculpture by locally-known artists. In November, Wayne brings the nationally known troupe the American Shakespeare Center to campus to perform As You Like It on Friday, Nov. 5 and Macbeth on Saturday, Nov. 6. Recently reviewed by The Washington Post as “shamelessly entertaining” and The Boston Globe as “Phenomenal…bursting with energy,” the performances give the community the opportunity to have a theater experience without having to travel far to get it. To further enhance the theater experience, the college is offering “Dinner and a Show” for the first time. Prior to Saturday evening’s performance, an Elizabethan-themed dinner will be served in the same building as the show. In October, Wayne College will be co-sponsoring Candidate’s Night with the League of Women Voters. Also that month, The University of Akron main campus is hosting China Week. As part of that celebration, a UA student will be sharing a documentary based on her recent trip to Asia that she wrote and produced as part of a class project. In the spring, the focus will shift to Earth Day as professors of biology and engineering lead a discussion about the state of the environment and what is going on in Washington to find new, cleaner energy sources. We will use nets and bug boxes to study the different types of insects and then release them to their home. Environment Investigators programs are geared for all ages of children working with adults. Free. Star Watch & Planetarium Show at The Wilderness Center- Fri., Aug. 6, 8 p.m. Join TWC’s Astronomy Club for a Planetarium Show, then view the real things through telescopes. All ages. Free. Snake Walk at The Wilderness Center- Sat., Aug. 7, 10 a.m. Join Naturalist Carrie Elvey on a hike to look for snakes. Dress to be outside and off the trail. The hike will last about 1 hour. Free. Foxfield Preserve Info Session at The Wilderness Center- Sat., Aug. 7, 2 p.m. Foxfield Preserve is a nature preserve cemetery at TWC. Natural burial is an economical, environmentally friendly alternative to modern burial, as fewer resources are used. As a nature preserve, we provide wildlife habitat, a clean watershed, and clean air. Walking trails allow everyone to enjoy the beauty and serenity of the preserve. Fossil Wall Weekend at The Wilderness Center -Sat., Aug. 7 & Sun., Aug. 8, 2 p.m. Come examine The Wilderness Center's fossil wall and have it explained by docent Ken Renner. Learn how and when life developed on our planet and see all the animals on it that have come and gone. All ages. Free. Summer Storytelling Concert at The Wilderness Center- Sat., Aug. 7, 7-9 p.m. Into the heat of summer already! Although there is no regular storytellers meeting in the month of August, we will be having a Storytelling Concert Aug. 7, 7-9 p.m. with light refreshments during intermission. Please come out of the heat and spend an evening of storytelling, drama, and wit, with limited commercial interruption. The Perseid Meteor Shower is one of the most active meteor showers of the year, with an estimated predicted fall of 40-80 meteors an hour! Join us at TWC to enjoy this spectacle. We’ll start at dark, but viewing is best after midnight. Bring a comfortable lawn chair and dress for the evening chill. Cancelled if cloudy. Butterfly Walks at The Wilderness Center- Sat., Aug. 21, 1-2 p.m. & Wed., Aug. 25, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Learn about life cycles of butterflies and how to identify them. We will walk the Prairie trail to view the common butterflies visiting the area. Each participant will receive the booklet Common Butterflies and Skippers of Ohio, a Division of Wildlife publication. Cancelled if raining. Free. The Wilderness Center is a nonprofit nature center located one mile west of Wilmot, Ohio just north of highway 250. The Center is dedicated to connecting our community with nature, educating people of all ages, conserving natural resourses and practicing environmental stewarship. Mohicanville Community Church Four-Session Conference Mohicanville Community Church, at 343 State Route 95 in Mohicanville, is hosting a Four-Session Conference on Sunday, August 15, on the origins of God’s creation and the authority of the Holy Scriptures. The sessions will begin at 9:30 & 10:45 a.m. and 6:00 & 7:30 p.m. Bob Gillespie with Answers in Genesis and the Creation Museum in Kentucky will be the guest speaker.
