SUMMARY:Wayne County Planning Dept. Clean Ohio AEPP Program
DESCRIPTION:
Wayne County Planning Dept.
Clean Ohio AEPP Program

Applications for the 2010 Clean Ohio Agricultural Easement Purchase Program (AEPP) are open and available in the Wayne County Planning Department or online at <a href=\\"http\://www.agri.ohio.gov/farmland\\" title=\\"www.agri.ohio.gov/farmland\\">www.agri.ohio.gov/farmland.

This year there will be $6.25 million to distribute to Ohio Farmers to protect their farmland. Farmland preservation efforts ensure that agriculture remains a viable industry in our state. Farmland is the foundation of Ohio's $98 billion food and agriculture industry and the Clean Ohio funds\, which were supported by voters in every Ohio county in 2008\, are one tool for protecting Ohio's agricultural future. The Clean Ohio AEPP utilizes the agricultural easement\, a voluntary and legally binding restriction placed on a farm\, to ensure the land stays in agriculutre. This easement limits the use of the land to predominantly agricultural activity. The land still remains under private ownership and management and stays on the tax rolls under Current Agricultural Use Valuation (CAUV) and the farm can be sold or passed along as a gift to others at any time\, yet the restriction prohibiting non-agricultural development stays with the land.
Farmer's and landowners interested in applying for this year's OAEPP should contact the Wayne County Planning Department at 330-287-5420.

Applications must reach the Ohio Department of Agriculture by April 26. The Wayne County deadline for submitted applications is April 19.

DESCRIPTION:
Join The Wilderness Center for an adventure in nature with our EcoTours!

Spring Ozark Ramble
May 14-24\, 2010
Join TWC Executive Director\, Gordon Maupin\, as he returns to his old Ozark stomping grounds with a biogeocultural ramble through the Ozark highlands of Missouri and Arkansas.

David Tylka\, a vertebrate biology professor from St. Louis Community College\, will join the trip as the local naturalist. Gordon and Dave worked together to make the itinerary unforgettable.

The trips will begin with a flight to St. Louis and quick travel to Ha Ha Tonka State Park in the Missouri Ozarks. The group then heads south with a stop at La Petite Gemme Prairie\, a Missouri Natural Area and native (never plowed) prairie. Then it's down into the Boston Mountain section of the Ozarks.Using Harrison\, Arkansas as a base\, you will visit the Ozark Underground Laboratory for a combined surface and underground tour to learn how water has shaped the Ozark Mountains from above and below.

The following day we'll visit the Ozark Natural Science Center where various species of wildlife\, including Box Turtles\, have been radio tagged. There will be time to visit a special waterfall as well.

The next day will include some stops along Buffalo National River\, including Lost Valley\, a spectacular limestone valley with waterfalls and Ozark wildflowers.

Then the group will head east through scenic highlands to Mountain View\, Arkansas to visit the Ozark Folk Center and soak up some cultural history. The group will also visit Blanchard Spring Cavern\, one of the most spectacular caves in America ever opened for tourism.

The trip will then swing north again with visits to Grand Gulf\, Mammoth Spring and Big Spring on the way to Poplar Bluff. From Poplar Bluff the group will drop off the Ozark highlands for a daylong visit to Mingo National Wildlife Refuge to view a Cypress Tupeleo swamp.

The next day we head north to the St. Francis Mountain. These ancient mountains are a granite intrusion into the mostly limestone Ozarks. There we will see Elephant Rocks and some other natural and geological places of interest. The last day will be a short drive through the Ozarks to return to St. Louis.

If you are interested\, contact Gordon at <a href=\\"mailto\:gordon@wildernesscenter.org\\">gordon@wildernesscenter.org or 1-877-359-5235. With the bell-clear harmonies of Jeanie Creamer\, Mike Thieken\, Karen Bump\, Jamie Tevis\, and Bea and John Hollback\, Home Remedy takes traditional mountain material and makes something at once as old as the hills (literally) immediately contemporary. Everyone sings\, a full half of the band plays fiddle or guitar\, and all switch up as needed from song to song\, with a sprinkling of autoharp\, dulcimer\, mandolin\, standup bass and traditional percussions.
SUMMARY:Child Survivor of the Holocaust to Speak at The College of Wooster
DESCRIPTION:
Jacqueline Grossman\, a child survivor of the Holocaust\, will share her experiences of life on the run when she speaks at The College of Wooster on Tuesday\, April 13\, in recognition of Yom Ha-Shoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day). The lecture\, which is free to and open to the public\, begins at 7 p.m. in Room 009 of Severance (Chemistry) Hall (943 College Mall).

Grossman\, the author of Chased by Demons\: How I Survived Hitler's Madness in My Native France\, was eight years old when Hitler's troops marched into her homeland. Originally\, her Jewish identity was concealed\, and she managed to win a national art award from the Vichy government\, but fate intervened\, and she found herself trying to elude authorities with her two younger sisters before being brought to the United States\, where she became a community organizer\, promoter\, manager\, entrepreneur\, actor\, director\, painter/sculptor and fund-raiser. Dubbed a \\"Jackie of all trades\\" by a San Francisco peninsula newspaper\, Grossman was featured on its front page for leading the community to a successful building-fund-raising conclusion where others had failed. Her activities often caught the attention of media photographers\, including a flight in a helicopter for a groundbreaking ceremony as a patron \\"angel\\" (complete with halo\, wings - and a shovel).

After raising her two children\, Grossman returned to college and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley\, while also attending a community college full-time and serving as student body president so she could conclude her campaign for a re-entry students' campus child-care center. In graduate school\, she received a President Carter Internship award. She holds three lifetime California college-level teaching credentials\, and taught in several San Francisco Bay Area community colleges. She earned degrees or certificates in fashion design (in Paris)\, geology\, public administration\, management\, and computer science.

Grossman also founded and ran Compuskil Enterprises\, a computer instruction corporation in Silicon Valley\, and later became a general contractor and built her own house in the country. Art then re-entered her life\, and her expressionist sculptures placed her in juried regional art exhibits. She won grants from her county's Arts council\, which honored her with a one-woman show under the name\, 'jacquot.'

Grossman's visit to Wooster is sponsored by Hillel and Phi Alpha Theta history honor society\, and made possible by the Kornfeld Fund. Additional information is available by phone (330-263-263-2448) or e-mail (<a href=\\"mailto\:jfriedman@wooster.edu\\">jfriedman@wooster.edu).

SUMMARY:Rose Family Offers Challenge Grant for Christmas Run Pool
DESCRIPTION:
Rose Family Offers Challenge Grant for Christmas Run Pool

Mark Gooch\, chairman of the Friends of Christmas Run Pool (FOCRP) got some welcome news when a potential donor to the Christmas Run Pool Fund offered a one-for-one matching challenge grant to boost their fundraising efforts to keep the pool open.

The challenge is made possible from the Rose Family Charitable Fund\, established to honor Grant and Margaret Rose\, long-time Wooster residents. This fund will match all donations up to a total of $25\,000\, made between now and June 6\, 2010\, which is the opening day of the Christmas Run Pool.

“By meeting this challenge\, we would be able to add $50\,000 to what we have already received\,” said Gooch\, “which would get us fairly close to our initial goal. It also gives potential donors and businesses a greater incentive to support some of the fundraising activities planned by the committee. We are extremely grateful to the Rose family for making this challenge grant possible\,” he added.

All donations qualify for a charitable tax deduction and checks should be made payable to the Wayne County Community Foundation\, listing Christmas Run Pool on the check memo line. Donors will be recognized by FOCRP based on their contributions within the below five giving levels\:
•	Whale $5\,000 and up
•	Marlin $1\,000-4\,999
•	Dolphin $500-999
•	Starfish $100-499
•	Goldfish $0-99

The WCCF is a tax exempt public charity that consists of nearly 300 separate funds that were generously donated to benefit the community. Since 1978\, it has awarded over $43 million to the community in the form of grants and scholarships.

SUMMARY:Coshocton County Beagle Club Hosts Annual Beagle Nationals in Coshocton
DESCRIPTION:
Coshocton County Beagle Club Hosts the
Annual Beagle Nationals in Coshocton\, Ohio
April 17 &amp\; 18\, 2010

The United Kennel Club’s 2010 Beagle Nationals is a hunting beagle event held annually in Coshocton\, Ohio. In accordance with UKC Rules and Regulations\, no game is taken and no firearms are allowed. There will also be a Beagle Bench Show on Saturday. The Bench Show offers something a little different\, in which the Beagles are judged on a breed standard.

The Beagle event will start off on Saturday\, April 17\, with a hunt at 7\:00 am. Later that day will be a Bench show at 2\:00 pm. The following day will contain one hunt at 7\:00 am.

Hunting Beagle events offer the participants a chance to participate in each cast as an active handler. Both the handler and his dog work as a team while attempting to outscore the three other handlers and dogs in the cast. Where casts are randomly drawn at the local clubhouse and are sent to the brush to be run on wild rabbits and judged under simulated hunting conditions.

The Beagle breed was originally conceived as a dog to pursue rabbits and bring them around to the gun for hunters. The UKC Beagle program strives to keep each breed as it was originally intended. Letting natural instinct take over and seeing what the Beagle can do best.

Along with the Hunting Beagles\, UKC will hold one Bench Show taking place Saturday. Bench Shows are traditional “Dog Shows” for Beagles. Teams entered in Saturday’s Bench Show compete and go against Champion and Grand Champion caliber Beagles for the chance to be crowned 2010 UKC Beagle Nationals Overall Champion.

Established in 1898\, the United Kennel Club is the largest all-breed performance-dog registry in the world\, registering dogs from all 50 states and 25 foreign countries. More than 60 percent of its 13\,000 annually licensed events are tests of hunting ability\, training and instinct. UKC prides itself on its family-oriented\, friendly\, educational events. SUMMARY:Towpath Trail YMCA Healthy Kids Day
DESCRIPTION:
THE TOWPATH TRAIL YMCA ENCOURAGES FAMILIES TO PUT PLAY IN THEIR DAY ON YMCA HEALTHY KIDS® DAY\, APRIL 17th

As part of a nationwide effort to encourage kids to get moving\, the Towpath Trail YMCA will host YMCA Healthy Kids Day\, the nation’s largest health day for kids and families. YMCA Healthy Kids Day is filled with fun\, engaging and creative activities that foster healthy living\, and is a part of the YMCA’s larger efforts to help more kids and families become physically active. All activities are free and open to the public.

YMCA Healthy Kids Day at the Towpath Trail YMCA will provide resources to help educate grown-ups about making healthy choices for their families every day. There will be activities such as 10 minute pony rides\, a bounce house\, healthy snacks\, and much\, much more.

“Keeping kids healthy is at the core of what the YMCA stands for\,” said Beth Alban\, Associate Executive Director for the YMCA of Western Stark County. “The word ‘exercise’ doesn’t sound very enjoyable to many people\, especially kids\, but getting them to move more through play that requires physical activity is the key to building healthy habits that last a lifetime. On YMCA Healthy Kids Day\, both kids and grown-ups will have the opportunity to get moving\, to play and to have fun.”

Experts recommend that kids engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity\, including active play\, each day. Studies show that kids who consistently engage in play are happier and healthier\, and develop and enhance a variety of skills including motor skills\, social skills\, problem solving\, and creativity. Kids who get 60 minutes of physical play also tend to have higher self-esteem and perform better academically.

To make more time for physical activity\, the Towpath Trail YMCA offers simple ways to put more play in kids’ day\, and to get the family moving more\, too!

1.	Make physical activity a regular part of family playtime – the more active kids are the more likely they are to continue being physically active later in life.
2.	Allow kids to have unstructured playtime. All play is not created equal – kids need different types of play\, including indoor and outdoor\, active and inactive.
3.	Reintroduce your child to the basics of active play\: play hopscotch or basketball\, jump rope\, or enjoy games such as Red Light\, Green Light and Simon Says.
4.	Limit screen time and use of electronic media to allow more time for play.

SUMMARY:Adult Student Information Night at The University of Akron Wayne College
DESCRIPTION:
The University of Akron Wayne College will hold an Adult Student Information Night on Thursday\, April 22\, beginning at 6\:30 p.m. in the college’s auditorium.

Prospective students can talk with Wayne College staff and ask questions about financial aid\, majors available\, degrees offered and the application process. Tours of the campus will be available throughout the evening.

Admissions Counselor Traci Carmony hopes that adults will “test drive” a class while they are on campus. “Some students\, especially adults who have been out of the classroom for a few years or more\, aren’t sure what to expect from a college course\,” says Carmony. “Our professors are prepared that night for extra students who want to sit in on classes to see exactly what they would be getting into if they make the decision to start or return to college. I’m confident that adults will appreciate the comfortable learning environment at Wayne.”

Wayne College is located at 1901 Smucker Road in Orrville. For more details on the Adult Student Information Night\, call Carmony at 1-800-221-8308\, ext. 8909 or 330-684-8909.

SUMMARY:Kids in the Kitchen Event
DESCRIPTION:
The Junior League of Akron Announces Kids in the
Kitchen Event on Sunday\, April 25th\, a Free Event for Families at the Shaw JCC will Educate Children on the Importance of Eating Well and Staying Healthy

The Junior League of Akron invites families to attend a free Kids in the Kitchen event on Sunday\, April 25\, from 1-3 p.m. at the Shaw JCC\, 750 White Pond Dr.\, Akron\, OH44320. The Family Fitness Picnic themed event will educate children ages 5-10 and their families on the importance of choosing healthy foods and being active. Children will have the opportunity to prepare their own healthy snacks and participate in a variety of fitness challenges. The first 75 children in attendance will receive a gift bag with healthy eating tips\, recipes and prizes!

In partnership with the staff of the Shaw JCC\, the provisional class of the Junior League of Akron will assist children as they visit food and fitness stations with activities that will educate about the food pyramid and the importance of physical activity. “The Shaw JCC helps enable families to be ‘fit for life\,’ and this Kids in the Kitchen Family Fitness Picnic is a great opportunity for children to have fun learning healthy eating and exercise habits that can serve them for a lifetime\,” said Stephanie (Davis) Dieringer\, Director of Health and Wellness at the Shaw JCC.

There is no cost for this event\, but space is limited\, so please reserve your spot today! Guests are asked to RSVP with a name\, number attending and phone number by April 16\, 2010 to <a href=\\"mailto\:kitkakron@yahoo.com\\">kitkakron@yahoo.com or 330-836-4905. Please plan on arriving at the event between 1 and 1\:30 p.m. to allow enough time for children to make their way to all of the food and fitness stations. Children outside the 5- to 10-year age range are welcome to attend\, but programs have been designed with this specific age group in mind.

“With our Kids in the Kitchen initiative\, the Junior League of Akron seeks to empower Akron’s youth to make simple but enjoyable choices that can help reduce the likelihood of obesity and the health challenges associated with it\,” said Harriet Chapman\, President of the Junior League of Akron.

Kids in the Kitchen\, launched in 2006 by Junior Leagues in over 200 communities in four countries\, is a program designed to help address the urgent health issues associated with childhood obesity and poor nutrition. Junior Leagues are committed to improving the health of today’s youth in response to the alarming statistic that nearly one-third of children and adolescents in the United States are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight.1 Even more alarming is that childhood obesity has been shown to be the leading cause of pediatric hypertension\, is associated with Type II diabetes\, increases the risk of coronary heart disease\, increases stress on the weight-bearing joints\, lowers self-esteem and affects relationships with peers.2

Children and families can learn more about living a healthy lifestyle and the Kids in the Kitchen initiative at <a href=\\"http\://www.kidsinthekitchen.org\\" title=\\"www.kidsinthekitchen.org\\">www.kidsinthekitchen.org. As children are more likely to eat foods that they helped prepare\, the Junior Leagues offer an online recipe collection featuring kid-friendly\, nutritious recipes from celebrities\, chefs and athletes. The website also features downloadable nutrition and exercise tips\, quizzes to test kids on their nutritional knowledge and the USDA’s MyPyramid Blast-Off game\, an entertaining way for kids to learn guidelines for daily food consumption and physical activity\, tailored to their nutrition and fitness needs.

SUMMARY:ARTERY EXPLORER HELPS ORRVILLE AREA RESIDENTS
DESCRIPTION:
Virtual Journey through the Arteries Mobilizes People to Make Healthier Choices

WHAT\: The Artery Explorer is touring the country for the second year as part of US AGAINST ATHERO\, a nationwide effort sponsored by AstraZeneca to increase awareness of atherosclerosis—the dangerous buildup of plaque in the arteries. Orrville area residents can take an eye-opening virtual tour of the human arteries in the Artery Explorer\, a multisensory experience that helps people understand arterial health.

WHY\:	Atherosclerosis is a leading cause of coronary heart disease\, which affects more than 16.8 million Americans and is the number one killer in the US. Despite its prevalence\, many people do not know about or understand atherosclerosis \, because it builds silently over many years\, causing virtually no symptoms until it leads to a serious event such as a heart attack or stroke. In 2009\, 785\,000 Americans will have a new heart attack\, and every minute one American will die from a coronary event.1 By taking participants “inside” the human arteries\, the Artery Explorer vividly illustrates the causes\, progression\, and consequences of atherosclerosis to help people understand their risks.

WHO\: Everyone is welcome to experience the Artery Explorer and to join the US AGAINST ATHERO campaign. Growing Healthy Habits will be on site to answer questions about atherosclerosis and the US AGAINST ATHERO movement.

WHEN AND WHERE\:	The Artery Explorer will be at Dunlap Community Hospital on April 27\, 2010.
WHERE\:	Visit <a href=\\"http\://www.athero.com\\" title=\\"www.athero.com\\">www.athero.com to see a video of the Artery Explorer and register for the educational Athero IQ Program. This is a free event.
