The enchanting story of Beauty & the Beast is this year’s Wayne Center Ballet spring production centerpiece. Based on the French fairytale first published by Madame Barbot de Villeneuve, it is an original story ballet choreographed by Artistic Director Tricia Jenkins-Meyer and Brenda Klingbeil-Schwinn. It will be presented along with other four other dances, from modern to classical, showcasing the varied talents of Wayne County’s premiere dance ensemble on March 20 & 21. According to Jenkins-Meyer, she chose Beauty and the Beast for a several reasons. She said, “I wanted to do something different, and I feel this story had a lot to offer in the way of characters. There are so many versions of the story that I was able to create a lot of challenging roles for our dancers. I have really been able to draw from my dancers and make it theirs.” Beauty and the Beast is new to the Wayne Center Ballet repertoire, and it explores both the meaning of true love and has a reminder that we should not be so quick to judge others.” The story of the ballet tells the tale of a handsome prince who is cursed by an evil fairy to live life as a lonely, hideous beast, but who is also blessed by a good fairy to always keep a pure heart. Years later, Beauty is bound by her father is live at the Beast’s castle. While in his care, Beauty discovers the man inside the Beast and comes to love him for his true heart, freeing the prince from his curse. Featured performers are Michaela Boros as Beauty, and Morgan Bostdorff O'Rourke as Beast. Charlotte King plays the role of the Maid, while Jenny Shoots is La Fée Miserable and Stacey Ubelhart is La Bonne Fée. Kendra Shehy is the Rose Queen and Barbara Hodgdon is the Ice Queen. Dick Benson plays Beauty’s Father, and Emily Neill and Kayla Villegas dance as Beauty’s Friends. Appearing as Snowflakes are Sarah Boreman, Lydia DeVincent, Gillian Fannin, MaKailla Parsons, Alexandra Raber, Maggie Schlabach, Emma Strong, Jennifer Vicknair, Jillian Vicknair, and Abigail Werstler. Dancing as Shadows are Abby Cannon, Tia Fry, Erin McClintock, Samantha Murphy, and Emilie Raber, Jewels Lindsey Johnston (Ruby), Olivia Mann (Sapphire), Tricia Stefancin (Onyx); with Miriam King dancing as a Bat. Kailee Hagen is a Woodland Sprite. Roses are Lauren Balint, Elizabeth Boros, Meredith Bruch, Madelaine Fannin, Karien Graf, Zelie McLain, Emma Shehy, Jamie Shoots and Elise Weiland. This rich and varied spring dance program offers four other performances. “Paquita Pas de Trois,” an excerpt from the classical ballet Paquita. It is a demanding and purely classical piece, restaged by Brenda Schwinn, the Wayne Center Ballet’s Artistic Director Emeritus. “Motion of Emotion” is a contemporary piece set by WCB alumna and current dance instructor Stephanie Sustar. It demonstrates a modern/jazz style which represents a range of emotions. “Ballo Rosa” is a contemporary ballet piece set to a Vivaldi Concerto. Created by Jenkins-Meyer, it is inspired in part by her memories of watching the Ohio Ballet and Heinz Poll's pieces while she was growing up. The last featured piece is entitled “Reddition,” choreographed by WCB alumna Katelyn Rumbaugh. This modern piece illuminates a girl’s inner struggles (perfection, frustration, temptation) as her guardian angel’s presence guides her. Performances are scheduled for Saturday, March 20 at 2:00 and 7:30 pm and Sunday, March 21 at 2:00 pm at the Wooster High School Performing Arts Center. Wayne County Planning Dept. Applications for the 2010 Clean Ohio Agricultural Easement Purchase Program (AEPP) are open and available in the Wayne County Planning Department or online at www.agri.ohio.gov/farmland. This year there will be $6.25 million to distribute to Ohio Farmers to protect their farmland. Farmland preservation efforts ensure that agriculture remains a viable industry in our state. Farmland is the foundation of Ohio's $98 billion food and agriculture industry and the Clean Ohio funds, which were supported by voters in every Ohio county in 2008, are one tool for protecting Ohio's agricultural future. The Clean Ohio AEPP utilizes the agricultural easement, a voluntary and legally binding restriction placed on a farm, to ensure the land stays in agriculutre. This easement limits the use of the land to predominantly agricultural activity. The land still remains under private ownership and management and stays on the tax rolls under Current Agricultural Use Valuation (CAUV) and the farm can be sold or passed along as a gift to others at any time, yet the restriction prohibiting non-agricultural development stays with the land. Applications must reach the Ohio Department of Agriculture by April 26. The Wayne County deadline for submitted applications is April 19. all day

The Wayne County deadline for submitted applications is April 19. all day

The Wayne County deadline for submitted applications is April 19. all day

The Wayne County deadline for submitted applications is April 19. all day

The Wayne County deadline for submitted applications is April 19. all day

Two-day event features speakers, roundtable discussions, and panel presentations The College of Wooster will present "Bridging the Gaps: Diversity and Global Engagement in Liberal Arts Education," a two-day conference to celebrate its new Center for Diversity and Global Engagement, next weekend (March 26-27). The event will feature speakers, roundtable discussions, and presentations by students and faculty. The presentations begin Friday (March 26) with a keynote address by College of Wooster President Grant Cornwell, whose vision led to the establishment of the new Center. Cornwell's presentation will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall (303 E. University St.). After that, a reception will be held at 6 p.m. in the formal lounge of Babcock Hall (1315 Beall Ave.), where directors Susan Lee and Marc Goulding will welcome guests. In addition, Wooster's Ambassadors - five international students - will be available for casual conversation along with display items from their home countries. A private dinner will follow in Kittredge Hall. The conference sessions begin on Saturday morning with a panel presentation on "Diversity, Globality, and Liberal Arts Curricula" from 8:30-10 a.m. in Babcock's formal lounge. A second panel will follow from 10-11:30 a.m., during which students and faculty will discuss "Expanding Horizons: Off-Campus Experiences and the Liberal Arts." The first of two alumni speakers will address the group at lunch in Kittredge Hall. Davis Houck, a 1989 Wooster graduate and now an associate professor of communication at Florida State University where he specializes in rhetorical theory and criticism on political communication and sports as well as media and culture, will talk about the unheard women's voices of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. After lunch, three roundtable discussions will take place concurrently between 1:30 and 2:45 p.m. The three topics are "De-Constructing 'Whiteness,'" "Gender and Sexuality Across Borders," and "The Global U.S." The program concludes with a presentation from 3-4:30 p.m. by Thomas Espenshade, a 1965 Wooster graduate, and professor of sociology and a faculty associate in the Office of Population Research at Princeton University. Espenshade will discuss his latest book, No Longer Separate, Not Yet Equal: Race and Class in Elite College Admission and Campus Life. Wooster's Center for Diversity and Global Engagement (CDGE) is a nexus of programs and offices committed to "encouraging and fostering development of inter-cultural competency among all campus community members." Housed in the recently renovated Babcock Hall, which is also home for students living in the Cross-Cultural Living and Experiences Program, the CDGE serves as a base for campus and community initiatives addressing all forms of diversity. It also brings together student life and academic affairs while seeking to foster understanding of local experiences in a broader global context. The Center includes the Ambassadors Program, the Office of International Student Affairs, Off-Campus Studies, and the Office of Multi-ethnic Student Affairs. Start: 03/27/2010 9:00 am

The Winesburg Ohio Post Office will be participating in this year’s “Passport Day in the USA” on Saturday, March 27, 2010. The event is designed to bring attention to the fact that passports are needed for any International air travel as well as land border crossings between the US, Canada, and Mexico. Most cruises now require a passport as well. Now is the time to plan for that fishing trip to Canada, or visiting a relative staying in a foreign country! Staring last June, passports are required to re-enter the US from neighboring countries by land. And if you are traveling by plane, the requirement for a passport book has been in place for quite some time. Make sure you are ready for that trip by attending the Winesburg Post Office’s Passport Day, Saturday, March 27th, from 8 am to noon. Applicants will need to bring their original or a certified copy of their birth certificate, issued by the county or state, and not a hospital birth record. They also need a photo ID, such as a driver’s license or state-issued ID card. They will also need to know their parent’s birth information, i.e., when and where their parents were born. Other information is basic, such as address, occupation, and so on. Children age sixteen and under need BOTH parents present to execute the application. Photos are available at the Winesburg Post Office as well, making it a true one-stop shopping trip! Most passports take four to six weeks to issue, so be sure and plan early. Passport books and cards can be expedited, but there is an extra fee. The employees at Winesburg process passports on a daily basis also, but for this event, two clerks will be available to make the process quick and easy! The cost for a passport book, needed for air travel, is $115 and includes the photographs. A passport card, good only for land border crossings, costs $60 with photos. Passports fees are reportedly going up by $35 very soon, so now is the time to apply! Let Debbie or Sherri help you on March 27th from 8 to noon. No appointment is necessary. If you have further questions, please call the post office at 330-359-5512. Start: 03/27/2010 11:00 am
