Doylestown-Rittman Relay already raises $50,000

The Relay for Life of Doylestown-Rittman is being held this weekend, and already, more than $50,000 has been raised by 15 teams participating. The goal for the event has been set at $82,000. The event, for Doylestown and Rittman residents, will begin on Friday at 6 p.m. and run through noon on Saturday. It will be held at Doylestown Memorial Park.

First moonlight swim at Orr Pool Monday

Orr Pool in Orrville will be having the first of three Moonlight Madness family swims this upcoming Monday. The swim will run from 8-10 p.m. The cost is $4 for adults and $3 for children, and pass holders will be allowed in for free. Anyone looking for more information should call 330-684-5070.

Fire destroys two homes in Dundee

A fire that occurred in Dundee very early on Sunday morning destroyed two homes. Firefighters were called out to a house on Township Road 412 a little before 4 a.m. after a man, who was living in one of the homes, called in to report it. The two houses were connected by a porch and were located less than 10 feet apart. Fortunately, all of the occupants of the two homes were able to make it out safely. There were around 50 firefighters who responded and battled the flames for two hours.

House fire in Rittman

A home in Rittman was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning. Firefighters were called out to the home on East Ohio Avenue at around 4am and remained on the scene for nearly four hours. The fire has been ruled accidental, but remains under investigation. Damage to the home and its contents is estimated to be about $90,000. No injuries were reported.

Killbuck man pleads guilty to attempted drug trafficking

A Killbuck man appeared in Holmes County Common Pleas Court on Tuesday. 42-year old Raymond Krownapple pleaded guilty to one count of attempted drug trafficking. Sentencing in the case is scheduled for the afternoon of August 21st.

Wooster council looks into forming regional dispatching center

Council members in Wooster met Monday night and discussed the idea of forming a partnership with the city of Ashland. The proposed agreement would reportedly form a consolidated dispatching center that would serve both cities. Wooster officials say a regional dispatch center would not only offer better services, but would do so at a lower cost. Council will look more into the matter at a later date, after leaving the measure on first reading Monday night.

Mansfield man headed to prison

A Mansfield man will spend the next two and a half years in prison. 31-year old Robert Sprague was one of three men caught on tape earlier this year stealing from several Holmes County businesses. Sprague pleaded guilty to the charges related to the robberies, which occurred back in March. In addition to his time behind bars, Sprague was also ordered to pay back nearly $800 in restitution.

Holmes fair board hires Medina company

The Holmes County Fair Board has hired a company out of Medina to handle the excavation work at the site of the new fairgrounds. The board received four bids for the project earlier this month, and after reviewing them, decided to go with the lowest one. The exact amount of the winning bid though has yet to be released, as board members say there are still several details that need to be ironed out.

College taking down smokestack

One of the more recognizable structures on the College of Wooster campus is coming down. The college's smokestack, which is located near its football field, is part of a power plant that was built back in the 1920s. The smokestack is being disassembled as the power plant undergoes a conversion from coal to natural gas. School officials say they're hoping to have the smokestack completely removed by early August.

Board of Health discussing rabies

The Wayne County Board of Health was recently presented with a resolution to update its regulations concerning rabies. The resolution was originally introduced back in March, but due to the fact that several changes had to be made, the board is just now getting around to the first reading. A public hearing on the resolution will be held next month.
