Turkey

Thanksgiving is a great time of the year. Traditionally for me it means family, football and food. I'll get all of them in this weekend. Thanks to Orrville, WQKT's high school coverage will not break before the State Championship games. Another great run by an area team. Thanksgiving weekend football was commonplace growing up in the backyards in my neighborhood. A great memory to be sure. Here's hoping you enjoy the time wherever you might be.

Pigskin pride

Unchartered territory for area football teams. This is the first time that we have had four Wayne County schools in the second round. Hard to figure sometimes.

Great win by Dalton. Maybe biggest upset playoff win by a local ever.

Hillsdale gets rematch with PH. Different season, different result? Falcons looked as good last week as any WCAL team I have seen since Smithville in 2002.

Gutsy victory by Norwayne. Across the state, on the road. Cats are a tough ballclub. Now, its Ursuline. Ursuline, really? The Irish, some think, could compete for D-1 title.

Week 11

Another high school football regular season has flown by. 10 weeks seems to go quicker and quicker. Congratulations to our five area playoff teams. Orrville is back in for the 21st year. Triway has a nice streak of three in a row and will play the Riders in their fifth postseason. Dalton returns for back to back years and the 10th time overall. Finally its Hillsdale and Norwayne. Wow how things have changed a bit in the WCAL. I don't know if it's a balance of power but it's great to see "other" teams succeed. We have seen this coming for a few years now.

Sit around and wait

Leave it to baseball and kill any momentum from the opening round playoff series. Fresh off a no-hitter and great pitching everywhere, let's wait nearly a week to begin the league championship series. Yea, that's a good idea. Just like the NBA, television runs the show but come on. Why not rest two days and go again? Nothing on Wednesday and Thursday - baseball could be King. Many people, like myself, don't watch a ton of games thru the regular season but the playoffs are great. Pitching is at its best, timely hitting.

Mother nature

Another severe storm in the area last night. Two tornado's in four years is way too many. So much damage, but thank goodness there were no major injuries. It puts sports out of your mind. You just feel for those affected, those that will have to rebuild. A football game just doesn't seem that important. It's great to have passion for sports, and your teams, but a reality check always put's things back in perspective.

Pigskin fun

Is there a better sport that college football? Everybody has there favorites, for one reason or another. The NFL is huge, there is the NBA excitement thing and although some may diasagree, I still like going to a baseball game and just relaxing. Doesn't have to be a Major League game, I still like baseball.

Ready to go again

The start of High School Football is this week and marks the end of summer. Maybe not on the calender, but in reality it's done. As you get older you try and slow down the summer months, heck every month, but it seems to go faster and faster each year. People start asking about football and whose going to be good, who you doing first week, that kind of stuff, starting several weeks ago. I always say the same thing. "Haven't thought about it much, it will get here quick enough." And here it is. That said, I'm ready. There's something special about high school football. The atmosphere makes it special. Pre-game music, band warming up. Popcorn and hot dogs. Football meant a lot in the community I grew up so I might view it different than others. But I think most who love sports feel the same. Another season is here...so let's go.

Swartzentruber Scramble has great turnout

Great weekend for golf. Gotta send out a huge thank you to everybody who played in the Swartzentruber Memorial Golf Classic Saturday at Riceland Golf Course. We had 148 golfers for the four-person scramble. That's 37 teams. Unfortunately we had to turn some people away. Unbelievable turnout. Some of these folks I only see once a year so it is always a special event. I can't explain the huge numbers this year except to say that the stars aligned. As always, it is out of respect for Galen that people show up. Hard to believe it's been eight years since our colleague and friend passed but it's great to gather, have some fun and raise money for local youth golf programs. Another big thanks to Larry Lisic and the entire staff at Riceland who make having an event such as this extremely easy. Thanks again. Fairways and one putts to all.

Movin' on

Is it over yet? Just waiting for The Big Show to leave town. By now, everyone has voiced their opinion on the Lebron James Saga. Most that I've heard are pretty similar. I really thought he would stay...until I heard about the Chris Bosh deal a week before the announcement. The Cavs have done about all they could in the last seven years. They've been aggressive, spent money, brought players in...and in the end they have to take eight steps back. I'm not going on about why James should have stayed. Quite frankly I am now sick of the whole thing. However, leave the room with some class. Give the Cavs a personal phone call. Show some respect for the people (fans) who have idolized you since high school. Just when you have thought you have seen it all! The "ME" movement is alive and well in South Beach. It's not the real world is it?
I always wondered why my dad was not a huge professional sports fan when I was growing up when I knew that he played and loved sports his whole life. I have finally got it the last few years. No such word as enough anymore. Just worry about number one.

Summer is here

Summer officially got underway this week. If that's the case then why do people say that July 4th is the midway point of the season? The old adage is true, the older you get, the quicker time goes by.

Have you noticed that nobody is talking about the Indians any more? I know the Tribe is rebuilding. They have admitted that and even stated in March that they were on a plan that normally goes five years. Even so, can you remember a year in which there has been as little attention on the Indians as there is now? Maybe this is good considering the state of the ballclub but at least a little chatter means everybody hasn't forgotten about you.

Is Lebron staying has been the hot topic for a while. We'll know soon enough. I may be in the minority but I still believe he'll be a Cavalier next season.

The NBA draft was last night. Congrats to Ohio State's Evan Turner, who was the second overall pick to Philadelphia. Here's a guy who just got better and better each year and is a quality indiviudal. Here's hoping he has a good pro career.

The NBA draft is totally different that the NFL draft, which is still the king in this department. Can you imagine a team taking a guy in the first round who averaged three points and three rebounds a game? It happened with Kentucky's Daniel Orton going to Orlando. Three points and three rebounds? The word "potential" means more in this draft than in any other sport.
