Fall

Fall is officially here despite what the calender might say. The best season of the year is upon us. Football has cranked it up with the high schools and college and pro aren't far behind. Here in Wooster, that means the Wayne County Fair is close and that's as big as it gets for some in September. It just feels a little better in the fall. The weather usually cooperates and sports this time of the year is great. It means the start of a new season. Everybody begins fresh and coming off a normally calm summer, it's nice to crank it back up again.

Thanks again

Many thanks again for those that took part in the annual Swartzentruber Memorial Golf Scramble this past weekend at Riceland Golf Course. We had 108 golfers this year and considering everything, more than a respectable number. All our funds raised are contributed to Riceland Golf Course for their Junior golf program and to the Swartzentruber Junior Golf Series. Melinda Bates runs the series and does a fabulous job giving a place for young golfers to compete. As always, Larry Lisic and staff make everything easy from my standpoint.

OSU mess

You have to wonder how it ended so abruptly for Jim Tressel. Last year at this time he could do no wrong, or so we thought. The biggest question mark in history hangs over the Ohio State program and it can only get worse over the coming months, and probably years. The NCAA will take its time sorting through the mess and the letters USC keep coming to mind. OSU will get past this eventually and fans will still pack Ohio Stadium this fall but it will feel different. Shock, disappointment and anger are just a few of the many words to describe the feelings felt by so many.

Is it possible?

Seems to be the question. Is it possible? Can the Indians really contend this season. Fans really want to believe. I mean REALLY want to believe. I was with a group of 36 golfers this weekend out of town and can't tell you how many we're talking about the Tribe. Normal sports fans who like a little bit of everything, and the Indians were the number one topic of conversation. The start to their season has been nothing short of special but we all know the next question. Can they keep in going?

Tribe and weather

The Indians great start to their season is a little something positive for the northeast sports fan this spring. With a collection of guys you definitely need a media guide to find out about, the axiom that great pitching and defense always wins is surely proving true. We have no idea how this will translate into the rest of the year but one thing is for sure, its better for the Tribe to start well with no expectations and maybe struggle later then finish strong after a bad start, because by then, nobody is watching.

On to Baseball

The Hiland Hawks made an otherwise unspectacular Boys State Tournament memorable. The Hawks captured the Division Four crown with Saturday's win over Harvest Prep joining the 1992 team as Boys State Champions. The added local feel in Columbus provided a much need punch to three days that overall were not spectacular. We always hope for compelling stories and close, well-played games but our high expectations aren't always realized. None the less, four champs were crowned and the 89th Boys Tournament is in the books...on to baseball.

March excitement

Unexpected past four weeks of basketball around the area again. Surprises, as usual, make things interesting. A week away from Boys State and things really haven't slowed much. Regionals for Hiland and Orrville and Girls State this weekend. The Scots run to another Final Four has been outstanding. Lucky enough to get one Final four in Virginia and another in Columbus. Here's hoping the next two weeks can be as fun as the last month.

Hoops are here

Our coverage of high school tournament basketball begins Saturday with the call of the Hillsdale - Columbia girls Sectional game from Wellington High School. It will end with the Boys State Tournament in Columbus March 24-26. All told, we will broadcast approximately 75 games on Wooster Radio during that five week stretch. Thanks to our local sponsors, our extensive tournament coverage continues in 2011. For over 20 years now, WQKT-WKVX Radio has embraced March Madness. Our sponsors make it happen and our announcers get it done. Ready for the journey again.

Don't be spoiled by Bucks

As Ohio State was winning the Sugar Bowl last night you could hear some fans complaining about "Tressel Ball". Too conservative they say, as OSU almost blew a 31-13 third quarter lead. In the end, things aligned and the Bucks were victorious. It won't be enough for some folks who complain that it was still not convincing enough. Spoiled. Way too spoiled. It seems that nothing is ever good enough.

Christmas

My thanks to everyone who helped out during the 7th WQKT - Steve Smith Classic at the College of Wooster. Everyone from the volunteers, the teams and the College itself. There was one major uniform issue that was rectified with the help of the Scots basketball team and the understanding of Hillsdale and coach Chris Shenberger, whose team showed great class in changing into the Scots gold.

Our relationship with the area schools and their coaches makes this a very special day for me and our staff here at WQKT and we can't thank everyone enough for making it all happen.
