Canton radio sports announcer dies

Sympathies go out to WHBC Radio in Canton with the passing of Jim Johnson. Jim was the sports voice at WHBC Radio. Growing up in Stark County, he was the person people that I and everybody turned into to hear high school football and basketball. His distinctive voice made it obvious to the listeners who was on the air when they tuned in. He had a low key style and was as professional as the come. Simply an outstanding broadcaster and better yet, a good guy.

Browns

Jimmy Haslem started with a bang yesterday, saying that Browns president Mike Holmgren will be gone by the end of the year. You can't fault the man for wanting his own people in positions of power after he just shelled out one billion dollars. Holmgren's track record as a coach is outstanding...as a GM, not so much ( see Seattle too ). Two winning seasons and one playoff appearance since the Browns returned in 1999 means another change at the top. What would this region do with a good Browns team? People would probably lose their minds.

Roundtable a big success....HS Football

The Ohio State Radio Network brought their weekly show "Buckeye Roundtable" to Wooster this week. We air the show Monday nights during the season on WQKT and thought that a visit to our area would be well received by the locals, and it certainly was. OSU will only take the show on the road three times this year and with a little lobbying on our behalf, they graciously came to Wooster. Everything could not have gone better.

Football

Another season of High School Football is underway. Expectations can start fresh for all the area teams once again. Can anyone dethrone Norwayne in the area this year is one large question. Judging by week one, it is going to be difficult. Who will be the surprise teams and performers in 2012? Ten plus weeks to sort it all out. Like always, the journey will be fun.

Again...a title

This kind of repeating is more than welcome. Another sports season ended with an area State Championship. The Hiland Hawks defended their Div. 4 Title in Basketball, claimed their third boys crown in school history. It's hard to believe that we can have three team state titles within the same school year, but its happened. Hiland had the pressure of winning or bust all year and accomplished the ultimate goal. 2011-12 is one for the books...but I guess we should wait a bit...spring sports are just starting.

Another Title

Hard to believe that we can celebrate two area state titles in one school year but Waynedale made that happen over the weekend by winning the Division 3 State Wrestling Title. Not bad for little old Wayne County. Waynedale faced a different type of pressure being one of the favorites in Columbus but delivered in a big way, on the biggest stage. No area wrestling team had ever finished better than 5th before this year. The championship for the Bears was also the first state title of any kind for Waynedale High.

WQKT - Steve Smith Classic

Thanks to all who helped make this years event happen. Hard to beleive the is year number eight. A good day of basketball was had again at the College of Wooster. The time sacrificed by all those who volunteered their help was invaluable and greatly appreciated. Year nine should be finalized soon.

Football over

We talked at the station in mid-August that summer is kinda over with high school football almost here. We took a deep breath and said, ok let's forget about weekends off and see what we've got. Little did we know that it included a State Champion. Norwayne's historic run capped a great year for the area and us. We have been blessed thru the years with area teams going deep into the playoffs and extending the really fun part of the season. This year was no different. With Norwayne, Orrville and Smithville adding to the postseason treats, playoff time was again fun time.

Playoff Push

Three area teams will head to the OHSAA football playoffs this weekend. Norwayne, Orrville and Smithville are preparing for action this weekend. We are fortunate to continue our local football coverage into Week #11. It does feel a little different showing up for a playoff game. The excitement is heightened quite a bit. We are looking forward to continuing our coverage all the way to the State Championship Games in Stark County on December 2-3. It will be our 16th straight year covering the finals and like the playoffs, will arrive in a blink.

Final stretch

The final three weeks of the high school football season are upcoming and a bunch of questions still need to be answered. Playoff teams from the area may be at a premium this year. Four or five postseason berths are normal for our area but if things fall badly, we might have just one playoff team this year. Norwayne continues to put up numbers that have been rarely seen in the WCAL. Can Hillsdale or Smithville slow the 'Cat roll? If so, they too could be playing extra weeks.
